In Veil + Experimental Book Design
The folded book brings attention to the oppression of women in parts of the world where religious, political, and social systems restrict their fundamental rights and personal autonomy. In these environments, women may face gender-based discrimination, limited access to education and political participation, and restrictions on choices that directly affect their lives.
For this project, I created a mask referencing forms of religious veiling and went to various public places, inviting people to participate. After discussing the realities faced by women living under these restrictions, I asked participants to symbolically look at the world through these women’s eyes by looking through the mask.
Using a Polaroid camera allowed participants to become directly involved in the project and immediately hold a physical record of their participation. The resulting photographs became part of the folded book, creating a collective visual response to the loss of freedom and autonomy experienced by women under oppressive systems.
